HOW THE PAIRS WORK

Each book is a full 60-page volume: how the form is built, when Germans really use it, and what learners get wrong. Each workbook is the writing half. Open it and you get a cover, a page showing exactly how the drills work, and 24 pages of eight fill-in sentences — with a section divider every time the workbook changes what it is drilling, setting out the new form, its full six-person table, and the mistake to avoid.

You are not filling in tables. You are writing real sentences: Ich rufe dich heute Abend an. Bis Freitag werden wir es geschrieben haben. Er sagt, er sei krank.

THE PARTS OF GERMAN THAT ACTUALLY TRIP PEOPLE UP

German splits its verbs in half. A separable verb sends its prefix to the end of the clause — ich rufe dich an — and in the Perfekt the prefix climbs back inside the participle: habe angerufen. Book 8 and its workbook drill that bracket until it is automatic, with the two halves written as two separate blanks so you feel where each one lands.

Book 7 handles the question no English speaker can guess at: which case does this verb take? Ich helfe dem Nachbarn, but ich sehe den Bahnhof. Book 9 sorts the strong verbs from the weak ones by ablaut class, so sprach and gesprochen stop being things you memorise one at a time. Book 6 covers both Konjunktiv moods, including the reported speech — er sei, er habe — that turns up on the first page of every German newspaper.
